Storm-Damaged Fence in Ocala? What to Do First

After a named storm rolls through Marion County, the fence is usually the first thing homeowners notice and the last thing they know what to do about. Before you pull a single board, work through the sequence below — it protects your safety, your claim, and your wallet.

First, treat it as a hazard, not a repair. Look for downed power lines tangled in the fabric or rails, leaning posts over a walkway, and gates that no longer latch. If you have a pool, a breached pool barrier is a code violation and a liability the same day it happens — temporary fencing goes up first, permanent repair second.

Second, document everything before cleanup. Photograph the full run from both ends, then close-ups of each broken post, cracked rail and torn panel. Include a wide shot showing the fallen limb or debris that caused it. Insurers pay on evidence; a cleared yard with no photos is a denied claim waiting to happen.

Third, understand what a Florida homeowners policy usually covers. Fences generally fall under 'other structures' coverage, typically around 10 percent of the dwelling limit, and storm or wind damage is normally a covered peril. What is normally not covered: rot, termite damage, rusted posts and gradual leaning that the wind simply finished off. Hurricane deductibles are percentage-based, so on smaller fence losses the deductible can exceed the repair cost — worth checking before you file.

Fourth, decide repair versus replace with the posts, not the panels. If the posts are still plumb and solid in their concrete, replacing sections is straightforward and far cheaper. If posts snapped at grade, are heaving out of the ground, or the run is leaning consistently in one direction, you are past patching. As a rule of thumb, when more than about a third of the run is compromised, a full replacement costs less over ten years than chasing repairs section by section.

Fifth, be careful who you hire. Storm season brings crews through Ocala who are not licensed here and will not be here next spring. Ask for a Florida license, proof of liability insurance and a written scope with material specs — never pay a large deposit in cash to someone who knocked on your door.

Finally, rebuild for the next one. Deeper post holes, full concrete footings, hurricane-rated hardware on gates, and on privacy runs a shadowbox or spaced-picket layout that lets wind pass through instead of catching it like a sail. The extra cost at install is a fraction of a second replacement.
